Inside Adam Savage's Cave: The Return of Moly Dee!

After his previous video expressing his affection for the copywriting on a vintage bottle of Moly Dee tapping fluid, Adam opens up this viewer mailbag to find a bottle of Molybdenite, the mineral that is the secret sauce behind Moly Dee itself! It's exactly the kind of novel gift that Adam loves and will find its home in the oils cabinet under Adam's workbench.

I have a pint bottle of Moly Dee from 15 years ago. It is the best, slickest cutting oil I have ever used. Because of the ridiculous cost I only use it for the toughest jobs. I reordered a bottle from MSC last week. In the fashion of the finest business WEASELS, Moly Dee cutting oil NO LONGER CONTAINS ANY MOLY DEE. That's right, zero. Some turds called BP Lubricants bought the rights to the name. It is now a sulphur based cutting oil like we use for pipe. Except the pipe cutting oil is $25/gallon and the "moly Dee" is $50/pint. Don't fall for this scam!

Molybdenum Disulphide powder looks like graphite powder because it has a very similar crystal structure and it's the same color. The similar crystal structure is why both make good lubricants: The structure readily breaks down into small flakes. There is also a research area of making Bucky-ball-like structures of the same chemistry to make the substance last longer. (This kind of dry lubricant usually breaks down from the free edges of the flakes. If you could close the surface on itself into something roughly spherical then it wouldn't have those free edges and would last much longer.)

i love moly-kote grease. My mountain bike always had excellent lubrication when I used it on bearings, headset, bottom brackets and a dry coat for cables (they don't gel up when it rains). I also use a dry application of moly on my firearms. Not oil. Sure, I have to clean them more often, but they operate so much smoother than an oil lubricant. Molybdenum.

I have in my collection a can of Molybdenum Disulfide grease "Longterm 2+". From my time in the Diesel Engine industry. German Diesels BTW although I worked in the US. A 1kg can. Dow Corning product made in Munich Germany. Label in FIVE languages! More than I can ever use in my lifetime! That stuff is wicked! I don't use it on anything that you can come in contact with because it is black and sticky and once you get it on anything it never comes off! Good from -25C or so to +130C. I've used it in machines I built or repaired for 30+ years and once it's in there it lasts IMO indefinitely! We have a saying here in Georgia (US) it is " Slicker than hot chicken fat on a stuck doorknob"... ;)

I’ve got a bunch of that molly powder, in the 90s we used to impact plate our long range bullets with the stuff, pretty cool but it turned out to cause other gun problems. Put a spoonful in a small Tupperware box along with a cup of steel BBs and your copper projectiles and put it in a vibrating brass case cleaner for a couple hours, it impact plates your bullets, making them grey.

Molyslip is amazing stuff, put it in a gearbox that is whining, manual transmissions only, or non limited slip differentials, and it will shut it up almost totally. Used it in industrial gearboxes as additive, and it makes them run cooler and quieter, plus slows wear on heavily loaded gearboxes. Generally I buy it in tubes, as a little will go a long way, and yes it is going to stick to every surface, and stay there pretty much forever.

I'm always reminded of "The Brothers O'Toole," a film in which Hans Conried goes to a mining town commonly called "Moly B'damn," because they're trying to find gold and keep just finding molybdenum -- a rare and very valuable mineral, but nobody knows it. Fast forward, and moly-b-damn is a key ingredient in high-pressure friction reduction. Motorcycle riders everywhere mourned the end of "Honda 60" paste (with 60% moly), used for such things as driveline splines, until word got around that Loctite has a 65% moly paste.

20 years ago, I used to work for a company that exclusively worked Molybdenum. It is a bizarre metal. Non ferrous, none conductive, wouldn't rust or tarnish. Required heat to press. From between 300 centigrade for 1mm small components to 1,000+ centigrade for 3mm plus large components. The components the company used to make were used in semiconductor industries (Heat sinks in microchips), magnet manufacturing. (We made furnace boats for a company that made magnets). train Brake components, and even golf club shock absorbers. And its very hard. I tried cutting through a 5mm thick bar that was 100mm wide with a 110mm grinder. The disc wore out before I got more than half way through it. I believe we were the only company in the UK that worked Molybdenum exclusively. The company was bought out by a big American company in 2002, and I moved away from the area. No idea if they are still running.

Here's another great product for tapping and lubricating. www.cmdlubeoil.com/extreme-pressure-lubricant/ I like the Lube #3 for tapping in sensitive areas as it's a grease so it holds the chips in the flutes of the tap which is handy in certain situations, like fixing Ford 5.4L engines that have ejected a spark plug or three as you don't have to worry (so much) about dropping chips into the cylinder.
