Comfort Movies During Lockdown - The Adam Savage Project - 10/27/20

Joey joins us this week to break down a scene in the original Alien as we talk about favorite movies that we keep revisiting and watching for comfort while working from home. These include movies we've watched with our kids as well as classics that let us just hang out with our favorite on-screen characters. Plus, we talk about the West Wing reunion on HBO Max and what production is like for crews filming today. What movies and TV shows have you been going back to during lockdown over the past year? And don't forget to vote!

Mentioning the need for 'Hang Out Movies', I think that these "Project" episodes fill that void for a lot of us. Thanks for letting us 'hang out' with you guys.

The fact that roles like Covid Compliance Managers are a thing, tells me that Covid isn't going away anytime soon, at least the restrictions won't be. These people's incomes are dependant on Covid, being a threat.

We've gone back to alien and aliens alot, but recently we've been taking a deep dive into classic horror that my partner hasn't seen which has been great to kind of go back to these films I haven't seen in over a decade! So its been that and a solid rewatch of Bones for us which is just such a comfort show for me.

Relating to the talk of building up a movie in your mind before even having seen it, when I was just 4 or 5, I remember catching a glimpse of a local late evening news segment on TV where they talked about The Exorcist (I'm not sure why, because this was the early '90s). When they showed brief clips of Regan while she's possessed, I was horrified, practically crippled with fear--I thought it was real because it was on the NEWS. I remember crying in my mom's arms asking her what was wrong with the girl. Since then, I hadn't had the courage to actually watch the movie until many, many years later. The idea of it in my young, impressionable mind was much worse. It is a fantastic horror flick in its own right, however--I find myself going back to it every October.

The safe thing has been done for real. There was a safe that was being delivered to a building and it had been lifted down off the back of the truck that delivered it onto the road with the crane on the truck and was still chained to the crane of the truck while the delivery guys were discussing how to move it into the building when someone decided to steal the safe by stealing the truck. They drove off dragging the safe along behind the truck and drove to their warehouse to try and open the safe. One of the shortest police investigations ever as the police just followed the huge scratch in the road. When they arrived at the warehouse the thief had just started trying to cut into the safe. The safe was of course empty anyway as safes aren't delivered with stuff in them. Some thieves are just dumb.

I'd love to ask Adam if he's familiar with the works of Oliver Postgate and the Smallfilms crew. They made short films for children's TV in England in the 1960's and 70's including Noggin the Nog, Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss, and The Clangers. They were made on tiny budgets, using a lot of innovative, home- made kit.

TV and Movie comfort food Babylon 5, Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica (only the 1978 original, not the BSG 1980 or whatever-the-hell-that-abomination of a reboot was), Firefly, Farscape, Star Trek (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY), Robotech The Last Starfighter, Tron, Ladyhawke, The Dragonslayer, Short Circuit. Star Wars 1-6, Star Trek 1-10 (not the JJ-Trek crap) Many of the Ray Harryhausen movies like Clash of the Titans, Sinbad I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and Last Crusade recently. I'm constantly going back to the Richard Sharpe Movies. White Christmas in December. Singing in the Rain is great any time.
